SacRT Street Harassment and Transit Safety Survey
As part of a statewide initiative to improve public transit safety, Senate Bill 434 (SB434) requires the top ten transit operators in California to conduct surveys identifying and addressing issues related to street harassment on public transit. In addition to collecting survey data, transit operators must publish the results (excluding personally identifiable information) to make them publicly available.
The survey is part of a statewide initiative led by California Senate Bill 1161 (2022), which directed the Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University to create a tool to gather information about street harassment on public transit.
SacRT’s Efforts to Enhance Transit Safety
Between October and November 2024, SacRT launched a comprehensive outreach effort to better understand and address the safety concerns of transit riders. The goal was to engage riders and collect their insights on transit safety. The outreach program included various initiatives, with respondents sharing their experiences and suggestions via an online survey and in-person outreach activities.
