SacRT Achieves Major Milestone with Two New Low-Floor Trains Completing 1,000 Miles of Testing – Ready for Passenger Service

May 30, 2024 SacRT News

The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT) is proud to announce that two of the 20 new S700 low-floor light rail vehicles that have been delivered, have completed 1,000 miles of testing, and are officially deemed ready for passenger service.

The 1,000-mile testing process is the final step of testing that is required to ensure all safety and quality standards are met before the train can operate on SacRT’s tracks when service of the new low-floor trains begins later this summer. The other 18 vehicles are currently in different phases of testing. Learn more about the testing process at sacrt.com/newtrains.

“Ensuring the safety and reliability of our trains is our top priority,” said SacRT General Manager/CEO Henry Li. “I commend our dedicated team for their hard work and commitment throughout the rigorous testing process. These new low-floor vehicles will enhance accessibility and comfort for all our passengers, and we are excited to place them in service on the Gold and Green lines later this summer.”

Tour the New S700 Low-Floor Light Rail Trains
SacRT invites the community to a special event on Saturday, June 1, 2024, to tour the new S700 low-floor light rail trains. This is a unique opportunity for residents to get an up-close look at the new vehicles and learn more about the features that will enhance their commuting experience. Light Rail Modernization Project
As part of SacRT’s commitment to being good stewards of the public funds it receives to improve the local transportation network, SacRT is quickly and efficiently modernizing the entire light rail system. The Light Rail Modernization project is a major capital project in the Sacramento region that includes the purchase and rollout of new accessible low-floor light rail vehicles, modifications to station platforms to meet the height requirements of the new vehicles, and the addition of a passing track to allow for 15-minute frequency at all four Folsom area stations. Learn more at sacrt.com/modernization

The first phase of station platform construction on the Gold Line is nearly complete, and SacRT will begin phase two of construction on Blue Line stations this fall. Riders are reminded to cross at the ends of station platforms rather than through the middle, as the Gold Line station platforms have been raised eight inches.

New RydeFreeRT Cards for the Summer

RFRT Blog Banner

Youth in grades TK through 12th can enjoy more freedom this summer to get to summer jobs, shopping centers, restaurants and more by taking advantage of SacRT’s RydeFreeRT, the fare-free transit program for students/youth.

New RydeFreeRT cards with a valid date of June 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025, are now available for students/youth to ride the entire SacRT transit network, including SacRT fixed-route buses, light rail, and SmaRT Ride on-demand microtransit service for FREE!

RydeFreeRT is available all day, any day of the week during regular SacRT service hours.

To ride free, students/youth simply need a valid RydeFreeRT card. Youth who are experiencing homelessness or taking part in foster programs are also allowed to participate in the program regardless of current residence or school address.

Students and youth who do not have a RydeFreeRT card can visit SacRT’s Customer Service and Sales Center located at 1225 R Street (adjacent to the 13th Street Station) or a participating Sacramento library. For more information, visit rydefreert.com or call 916-321-BUSS (2877).

Launched in 2019, RydeFreeRT was the first unrestricted youth fare-free ride program in the country. The program allows all 265,000 youth living in SacRT’s service area, from transitional kindergarten to 12th grade, including home-schooled students, foster and unhoused youth to ride all buses and light rail trains for free, all day, any day of the year.

The RydeFreeRT program has helped boost student ridership, which now accounts for nearly 25% of all SacRT bus and light rail rides over the last year. In fact, student ridership is on pace to carry 4.2 million youth in FY 2024, double what it was in 2019 pre-pandemic.

Note: The RydeFreeRT program does not apply to those over 18 years old that are pursuing their GED.

New Low-Floor Train Testing Underway

New train blog banner

SacRT is working on final preparations to launch new low-floor trains this summer. Part of that process requires us to test the new low-floor trains to simulate regular revenue service.

Day-Time Train Testing

Starting on Tuesday, April 30, 2024, the new low-floor trains will travel between Watt/Manlove and 13th Street stations between noon and 2 p.m. each day. This means that the new low-floor trains will be operating on the tracks in-between the high-floor trains, stopping at stations; however, customers will not be able to board them just yet.

Decals will be on the windows and doors that read "Test Train, Do Not Board" and caution tape will be across the doors on the inside, preventing customers from boarding the new trains.

This phase of testing will take place during the day and after service hours as part of the final phase called "Burn-In", which involves putting the new low-floor vehicles through 1,000 miles of track operation.

Night-Time Train Testing

Bus bridges (special shuttle buses) are in place on the north area Blue Line between Watt/I-80 and Royal Oaks stations for testing the new low-floor trains on the tracks between those stations during late night hours.

Bus bridge service is in place Monday through Friday from 11 p.m. through the end of service each day between Watt/I-80 and Royal Oaks stations.

The new trains are undergoing dynamic testing, which requires the trains to be on the track during revenue service to test multiple mechanical systems. Learn more on the new low-floor train testing process here: https://www.sacrt.com/newtrains

Bus Bridge Information (Monday - Friday)

Bus bridge (shuttle bus) will operate between Watt/I-80 and Royal Oaks stations Monday through Friday. The first trip will start at 11 p.m. and the last trip will depart at 1 a.m. The shuttles will be available every 30 minutes.

Stations with shuttle buses include:

  • Watt/I-80 Station
  • Watt/I-80 West Station
  • Roseville Road Station
  • Marconi/Arcade Station
  • Swanston Station*
  • Royal Oaks Station

*Swanston station is a request only station, if you need to get off at Swanston, please let the bus operator know.

More information on the testing process is available at https://www.sacrt.com/modernization.
