SacRT Breaks Ground on Future Dos Rios Light Rail Station, Expanding Transit Access in Sacramento’s River District

SACRAMENTO, CA – The Sacramento Regional Transit District (SacRT), in partnership with local, state, and federal leaders, celebrated a major milestone today with the groundbreaking of the future Dos Rios Station on the Blue Line. The new light rail station, located on North 12th Street between Richards Boulevard and Sunbeam Avenue, will provide a crucial transit connection for the growing River District and the Mirasol Village housing community.
This transformative project was made possible through a combination of funding sources, including $17.6 million in Transformative Climate Communities (TCC) Program, $10 million in Senate Bill 125 (SB125) Funds, $2.5 million in TIRCP Cycle 7, $1 million Congressional Directed Spending Request (Rep. Matsui), and a recently awarded $9.5 million RAISE grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. The grant completed the necessary financing for the $43 million station, ensuring its timely construction. With site preparation work already underway, major construction will begin this summer, and the station is expected to open by the end of 2026.
"The groundbreaking of Dos Rios Station marks a significant step forward in our mission to enhance mobility and accessibility for all,” said SacRT General Manager/CEO Henry Li. “This station will not only connect residents to jobs, education, and essential services but will also serve as a catalyst for economic development in the River District. We are grateful for the support of our federal, state, and local partners who helped make this vision a reality."
Congresswoman Doris Matsui, who played a key role in securing federal funding, highlighted the station’s importance to the community. "Public transit is the backbone of a thriving and equitable city. The Dos Rios Station is a game-changer for Sacramento’s River District, providing much-needed access to sustainable transportation. I’m proud to have helped secure funding for this critical project, and I look forward to seeing its positive impact on mobility, economic growth, and quality of life for our residents."
“The Dos Rios Station is a vital project for families living and working in the River District,” said State Senator Angelique Ashby. “In the 2023 state budget cycle, the Legislature set aside $4 billion for transit operations and projects like this one, through SB 125. That program provided $10 million for this project to address the funding gap that made today's groundbreaking and the critical access this station will provide possible."
"Today, we broke ground on Sacramento's transit future,” said Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty. “The Dos Rios station is more than just a new stop on the Blue Line; it's a vital connection for the River District -- improving access to jobs, housing, and services. We're building community, sustainability, and economic growth and equity.”
“The California Strategic Growth Council (SGC) is focused on investing state funds in neighborhoods like the River District and Mirasol Village - areas that don't have the transportation, housing, and other infrastructure needed for economic prosperity,” said Erin Curtis, SGC Executive Director. “This light rail station will ensure that residents here have reliable transportation - to get to work, to school, to the library, to spend time with their families. Sustainable, long-term solutions like this are exactly what SGC’s grant programs were designed to support. The SGC is proud to collaborate with the community and local partners on this transformative, future-leaning approach to community development.”
“Bringing this new light rail station to the River District is a game changer for residents and businesses where convenient, affordable access to public transportation is a vital necessity,” said La Shelle Dozier, Executive Director of the Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency (SHRA). “It’s a significant complement to the catalytic redevelopment in this area that has spurred mixed income housing, employment and economic development, and cultural amenities that will enhance quality of life in the district.”
"This project is about more than just adding a new station—it’s about ensuring residents have access to jobs, education, healthcare, and essential services," said SacRT Board Chair and Sacramento City Councilmember Rick Jennings. “I’m proud that SacRT is advancing projects that prioritize equity and mobility, while ensuring safe travel. I look forward to seeing this station serve the community for years to come.”
The Dos Rios Station is part of SacRT’s broader efforts to enhance the light rail network and improve service for riders across the region. By providing a direct transit connection in the River District, the station will support economic growth, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote equitable access to public transportation.
