Climate Ready Bus Shelters
Building a More Comfortable and Climate-Ready Transit Experience
SacRT is proud to launch the Heat-Resilient Bus Shelters Project, a forward-thinking initiative to improve rider comfort and safety during extreme heat events. Funded by the Governor’s Office of Land Use and Climate Innovation (LCI) through the Extreme Heat Community Resilience Program (EHCRP), this project will explore innovative shelter designs and install up to 20 new heat-resilient bus shelters across the Sacramento region.
Transit riders often face harsh weather conditions while waiting at bus stops – especially during Sacramento’s increasingly hot summers. This project aims to:
- Improve rider comfort by reducing heat exposure at bus stops
- Enhance climate resilience through sustainable shelter design
- Promote health and equity by prioritizing high-need locations
- Engage the community in shaping the future of transit infrastructure
SacRT Selects New Heat-Resilient Bus Shelter Design
After extensive research, evaluation, and community engagement process, SacRT has selected the Brazos transit shelter as its new heat-resilient bus shelter design. The selection follows months of studying shelter designs that can better protect riders from extreme heat while enhancing comfort and accessibility at bus stops throughout the region.
New Shelter Locations
The new shelters are planned to be installed at some of the shelter-ready locations identified in SacRT’s Bus Stop improvement Plan. Select locations are listed below. (Note, sites are currently going through a permit approval process and may be subject to change).
